King's delivery of the speech on August 28, 1963, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement. Delivered to over 200,000 civil rights supporters, the speech is often considered to be one of the greatest and most notable speeches in history and was ranked the top American speech of the 20th century by a 1999 poll of scholars of public address."

Fez hoje 20 anos

"O grande incêndio que destruiu o Chiado em Lisboa foi há 20 anos. O fogo galgou vários quarteirões e deixou em ruínas o «coração» da capital. Hoje o comércio voltou, mas o Chiado está diferente.

Quinta-feira, 25 de Agosto de 1988. Às 05:30 era dado o alerta. Um forte incêndio destruía o Chiado. Os bombeiros combateram o fogo durante 12 horas. Duas pessoas morreram e 73 ficaram feridas. Dezoito lojas foram consumidas pelas chamas e mais de 7500 mil metros quadrados arderam. Vários edifícios do século XVIII ficaram destruídos. As verdadeiras causas do incêndio que destruiu parte do «coração» de Lisboa nunca foram apuradas.

Vinte anos depois do incêndio, o Chiado é uma zona de contrastes. A requalificação urbana que se fez depois do incêndio permitiu restituir o Chiado aos lisboetas. Nasceram edifícios novos e uma nova estação de Metro.

Os armazéns populares foram substituídos por um centro comercial e dezenas de lojas de cadeias internacionais. No Chiado instalaram-se as marcas mais exclusivas da Europa.

O Chiado tem a construção mais cara de Lisboa. Em alguns casos o metro quadrado chega a atingir os 4 mil euros. O arquitecto responsável pela requalificação da zona, Siza Vieira, assumiu que o objectivo foi cumprido. A Câmara de Lisboa diz que o Chiado é um exemplo a seguir noutras zonas da cidade e em especial na baixa."
